Dayo Olopade (author of The Bright Continent, JD/MBA student) for a talk entitled:

The Bright Continent

This talk will introduce the major themes and arguments of The Bright Continent. Olopade will define and explain kanju—the specific creativity born of African difficulty. She will discuss the harms born of “poverty porn” and “formality bias”—the preference for institutions and states that is holding millions of people in Africa hostage. She will also discuss a few key innovations for development—in health, energy, education, and transparency—that are being driven by decentralized groups and the private sector. In general, Olopade will be answering the question of why Africa ‘s development trajectory is so exciting.

Olopade is a Knight Law and Media Scholar at the Yale Law School and a first year at the Yale School of Management. Previously she was a Bernard Schwartz Fellow at the New America Foundation. Olopade has reported from 20 countries for publications including The Atlantic, The Daily Beast, Foreign Policy, The Guardian, The New Republic, The New York Times and The Washington Post. Olopade majored in Literature and African Studies at Yale College.
