Event description:

Celebrate the life of the late Muhammad Ali with a 20th anniversary screening of Leon Gast’s riveting WHEN WE WERE KINGS, introduced by Professor Charles Musser.

An Academy Award-winner for Best Documentary Feature, the film includes astonishing footage of Ali, his “Rumble in the Jungle” rival George Foreman, James Brown, B.B. King, Norman Mailer, George Plimpton, Spike Lee, and more. Critic James Berardinelli writes, “You don’t have to be a sports fan to enjoy this. All you need is an appreciation of recent history and a desire to learn more about an event that had far more importance in the world’s eyes than any other heavyweight bout in the history of boxing.” 35mm print from the Yale Film Archive.
