Event description:

The Yale Undergraduate Association for African Peace, and Development (YAAPD) invite you to attend our annual conference, which is scheduled to occur from April 4th to April 5th 2014.

YAAPD was founded two years ago to empower college-aged youth interested in Africa to apply their academic and social interests to the progress of the continent. The students of this organization and their supporters seek to:

i.    Develop networks among students and professionals across a spectrum of fields and interests with the aim of promoting peace and development within Africa.

ii.  Create awareness about issues facing Africa and provide a platform to discuss strategic ways students on the continent and abroad can resolve these issues.

iii. Encourage and develop the leadership, conflict resolution and development initiatives of students interested in Africa.

Each year, YAAPD hosts the SANKOFA54: African Empowerment Conference, a two-day event that aims to provide students with the necessary tools, networks, and mentor relationships needed to effect change.

We recognize that solidarity and communal efforts of students on the continent and abroad is necessary for the future success of African development and peace. But we also acknowledge a need for studying and understanding our history and past, hence the name Sankofa, which is the name of an Adinkra symbol that reminds us of the need to return to the past in order to chart a prosperous and peaceful future. The theme of this year’s conference is: Pan-Africanism in the 21st Century.

During the conference, we will explore strategies for us to overcome the dilemmas of divisions and how we as individuals, as communities and as nations can work together to forge partnerships that foster success across the continent and promote peace.

This year, we will provide key networking and recruitment opportunities with top companies and NGOs on the continent including groups such as Dalberg Global Development Advisors. Lastly, we are very excited to announce that Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Leymah Gbowee will be attending as one of this year’s keynote speakers.
