In case you missed it, Beyoncé recognized Edward A. Bouchet as part of Black History Month! His portrait hangs at the entrance of the Afro American Cultural Center at Yale to serve as a reminder to students of his legacy as the first African American to earn a Ph.D and also the first African American to graduate Phi Beta Kappa. We strive to carry on and embody Edward A. Bouchet's legacy each and every day here at the Afro American Cultural Center.

#28DaysBlackHistory

Edward Bouchet, the son of a former slave, grew up in Connecticut with limited educational opportunities. However, he became the first African American to earn a Ph.D. from Yale in 1874 and the 6th American of any race to earn one in physics. He taught for 26 years at the Institute for Colored Youth and several other universities until his death in 1918, serving as an inspiration to generations of young African Americans.
