From Tonto to Tarzan brings together leading scholars and thinkers from across the country, as well as three Smithsonian museums: the National Museum of African Art, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and the National Museum of the American Indian. Introduced by African Art’s director Johnnetta Betsch Cole, the evening’s panel will feature:
Gaurav Desai, department of English Language and Literature, University of Michigan;
Adrienne J. Keene (Cherokee Nation), departments of American Studies and Ethnic Studies, Brown University;
Imani Perry, department of African American Studies, Princeton University;
Jesse Wente (Ojibwe), leading film critic and programmer for indigenous cinema; and
moderator Tiya Miles, departments of Afro-American and African Studies, American Culture, and History, University of Michigan.
