Nigeria and Its Diaspora (AFST 180/680, ER&M 313)
Spring 2015

Time: TTH 1:00 – 2:15

This introductory course focuses on Nigerians in the Diaspora with particular emphasis on the impact of Nigeria on Afro-American and Nigerian American culture. It is designed to give an overview of the trends and perspectives in the preservation and maintenance of Nigerian culture, history, dance, literature, traditional education, theater, politics, art, music, film, religion, and folklore among the descendants of the Nigerians who endured forced migration and those
who migrated voluntarily with specific reference to the Igbos and the Yorubas. It focuses on their impacts in their host communities in various places where they are known as African American, Nigerian Americans, Black British, Afro-Cuban, Afro-Brazilian, and so on.

This course will allow for vibrant and engaging conversation about the culture and politics of Nigeria. All students are encouraged to enroll in the course.
